Nguyễn Phú Sơn was born in 1991 in Hanoi and began pursuing his passion for music with the piano under the guidance of pianist Trịnh Hồng Trang. He has twice graduated with the highest grade in Composition from the Vietnam National Academy of Music and in Orchestra Conducting from Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts in Germany. In 2023, he returned to Germany to pursue a master's degree in Orchestra Conducting.
During over 6 years of studying in Germany under the guidance of Professor Klaus Arp and later the renowned Swiss conductor Stefan Blunier, he had great opportunities to study and perform as a conductor, pianist, and harpsichordist with various orchestras in Germany and Europe, such as the Deutsche Staatphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, National Theater Mannheim, Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen, Kurpfälzsisches Kammerorchester, Theaterorchester Kaiserslautern, Collegium Musicum Mannheim, Baden-Badener Philharmonie, Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts Orchestra, Plovdiv State Opera in Bulgaria, etc. Besides conducting, he studied harpsichord and historically informed performance under the guidance of the renowned Hungarian harpsichordist Miklos Spanyi.
In Vietnam, Nguyễn Phú Sơn is an active musician in various roles including conductor, harpsichordist, composer, and artistic program organizer. He gained more reputation after becoming the guest conductor of the Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra since 2020 and the annual guest conductor of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO) since 2021.
In 2024, Nguyễn Phú Sơn collaborate with the Vietnam National Opera & Ballet for the first time, performing the Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” ballet as a guest conductor.
Moreover, Nguyễn Phú Sơn is the co-founder Maestoso Vietnam, a classical music organization, which has sucessfully organized various notable projects such as the Cathedral Baroque Concert series, Music Education series "Evolution", etc. Particularly, at the Maestoso International Music Festival 2023 held in Malaysia, he participated in organizing, rehearsing and conducting three consecutive concerts and performed with the world-renowned pianist Armen Babakhanian, who is one of the winners of the prestigious Van Cliburn Competition.
Not only proactive in performing, but he also participates in many music education projects at universities, music schools, and art organizations. Nguyễn Phú Sơn is one of the first conductors in Vietnam to pioneer organizing workshops on "The profession of conducting an orchestra" targeting children and teenagers as the audience.
In his composition work, Nguyễn Phú Sơn focuses on writing in the styles of Baroque and Classical music for piano, harpsichord, chamber ensemble and orchestra.
